Professor Wall (Grant M. Dahl) and the Secession Minstrel mark the show’s 200th episode with Daniel Miller, President of the Texas Nationalist Movement. They recorded on the day a Texas House committee took up whether New Mexico counties could join Texas, and TNM put a 50-page white paper on that record ahead of the Texas Independence Referendum Act it expects filed in January.

Most of the hour is about mindset. Miller says the first flag of independence a person plants “has to be in your mind and in your heart,” and that people who gain political independence without it fall back into dependency. He walks through a passage in the Texas Declaration of Independence that troubled him for years, the charge that the Mexican people were “unfit to be free,” and now reads it as a judgment on people who handed their rights to the centralist coup, by support or by passivity. The Minstrel asks how a movement without Texas’s history keeps from going away. Miller answers that every state has that feeling somewhere in its makeup, and that TNM is rerunning its Can Texas Make It? economic analysis for other states. He calls this moment “the springtime of nations” and expects the next wave of independence movements to outsize the one that came with the breakup of the Soviet Union.
