Texas Nationalist Movement President Daniel Miller told the hosts of Secession Speakeasy that Texas independence is a process already under way, not a single day on a calendar. “When people ask me, well, when’s it going to happen, it’s like, dude, you need to wake up. It’s happening now,” Miller said on the program’s 200th episode, which host Grant M. Dahl published October 5.
Dahl, who hosts the show as “Professor Wall,” recorded the conversation September 30 with co-host Jason Green, a musician. It ran nearly 90 minutes.
Miller said most of TNM’s work goes into putting Texas’s own systems and structures in place now, so that the gap left to close is narrow when independence comes. He pointed to House Bill 1056 from the last legislative session, which made gold and silver legal tender in Texas as of September 1 and directs the comptroller to set up a transactional currency backed by the metals. He called it “a proto currency.”
Asked how movements in other states can match Texas, Miller said Texas is not unique, and that every state shares the same burden of a federal government he described as heading toward bankruptcy. His first advice was persistence. “You may try a thousand things. Nine hundred and ninety-nine of them may fail, but that one thing could propel you to independence,” he said. “The one thing that you can never do is you can never quit.”
His second was to start with people who already agree. “Find your people. There are already people who believe. Find those people, connect with those people, work with those people. Everybody else will come along,” he said. The issue “cuts weird,” Miller added. “It defies normal partisan lines, normal demographic lines.”
Green said he had read a line on TNM’s website before the show, “independence is built, not declared,” and that it challenged him. Miller said it grew out of something his wife has told supporters for years when they wait for someone else to act: “Independence is achieved. It is not received.”
Dahl called TNM “a beacon of hope for so many people.” He closed the episode by sending listeners to the Texian Partisan, which he called “one of the best places to go” for independence and self-determination news. Miller, for his part, said the movements in other countries inspire TNM in return. Of the saying that “a rising tide raises all ships,” he said, “Never has that been truer for anything more than self-determination.”
He was just as plain about where the decision rests. Outsiders who cheer for Texas are welcome, Miller said, but their opinions do not decide anything. “It’s no one else’s decision but the people of Texas,” he said. “The only opinion we need on our issue of self-government is the people of Texas.”
