Newsweek quoted the Texas Nationalist Movement in its preview of the Texas House hearing on adding New Mexico counties to Texas. The article, by James Bickerton, was published September 30, the day the House Select Committee on Governmental Oversight took up the question.
Newsweek described TNM as an organization “which argues for Texas to become an independent country.” It reported that TNM took “no position” on whether any New Mexico counties should join Texas but “insisted voters in Texas must also have their say.”
The magazine also carried TNM’s account of where the proposal stands in New Mexico. “Nobody in those counties has asked,” TNM’s statement said. “TNM found no resolution from the Lea, Eddy, or Roosevelt county commissions asking to join Texas, and no poll of the people who live there.” The proposal, House Joint Resolution 10, was sponsored by two New Mexico legislators and died in committee during New Mexico’s 2026 session.
The committee heard the item that night. The attorney general’s office told members that two states move the line between them by consent, and lawmakers of both parties said the people affected have to agree, the Partisan reported Thursday. Of 89 public comments filed on the item, 54 asked the Legislature to let Texans vote on independence.
TNM’s filed comment made the same case it made to Newsweek. “If that principle is good enough for 156,000 New Mexicans, it is good enough for the people of Texas,” it said. TNM seeks no territory for Texas and takes no position on whether any county should move. Its full testimony and its white paper, “The Line Moves by Consent,” are posted at thetnm.org.
Newsweek put the question to its readers on the morning of the hearing: whether Texans get the same say the House was weighing for the counties. The Legislature has not yet answered it.
