Released September 14, 2026, before Quebec’s October 5 election.

Professor Wall (Grant M. Dahl) and the Secession Minstrel take up Paul St-Pierre Plamondon’s announcement that a Parti Québécois government would not hold an independence referendum while Donald Trump is president, which pushes the earliest vote to about 2029.

The two hosts split on it. The Minstrel calls the timing reasonable for a province so tied to the United States, but worries the move edges from principle toward “a 4D chess thing.” As the hosts put it, “you’re either for separatism or you’re not.” Wall reads the delay as a deliberate two-step: govern well first, prove the province can run its own affairs, then ask for the mandate. Wall warns that the fear campaigns against independence will not end when Trump leaves office, noting that in Alberta, the case against independence barely mentions Trump at all.

Also in this episode

  • Wall’s reading of Jean-François Lisée’s book In the Eye of the Eagle, and the argument Wall draws from it, that Washington has never wanted an independent Quebec
  • The difference between secession as a credible threat, as in South Carolina’s tariff fight of 1832, and secession as an end in itself
  • What Quebec’s separatists can learn from the Alberta referendum campaign
