Secession Speakeasy #191: Texas Republicans Keep the Independence Planks
Professor Wall and the Secession Minstrel weigh the independence planks the Republican Party of Texas kept at its June convention, and whether Texas will be first out the door.
Released July 28, 2026.
Professor Wall (Grant M. Dahl) and the Secession Minstrel take up the June convention of the Republican Party of Texas, where delegates kept both platform planks on Texas independence: one calling on the Legislature to let the people of Texas vote on independence, and Plank 21 on state sovereignty. They work from the Texian Partisan’s coverage.
Wall reads Plank 21 aloud, including its affirmation that Texas retains the right to leave the union, and argues it carries more weight than the referendum demand on its own. He then walks through the planks on keeping the Texas grid independent, gold and silver as legal tender, hand-marked paper ballots and teaching Texas’s founding documents, which Wall calls the legs that hold up the table of Texas independence. The Minstrel is less sure Texas will be first out the door. “I hate to get into predictions, but my gut feeling is that it will happen somewhere else,” the Minstrel says, worried that people who have moved into the state could make a referendum close. Wall shares the worry about the count and wants vote counting cleaned up before any referendum is held. Wall’s larger argument is that organized, volunteer-driven work is the answer to the mob mentality he sees rising on the left and the right. As Wall put it, the TNM “is showing the way to peacefully rebuild out of the wreckage of the empire.”
