If Texas truly secured the border and the federal government moved in, arresting DPS officers in a standoff, Miller expects Texas independence support would rocket past 80 percent. His read is that Abbott avoids that confrontation because, when forced to choose, he would be the one to back down to the feds. Other states, Miller noted, are looking to Texas to lead and do not much care what Washington says.
