Allen West’s open letter on the education savings account bill carried the title “What Is School Choice?” He tells Daniel Miller that parents already have that choice, and his own parents sent him to a private Catholic school in Atlanta. The goal, he argues, should be educational freedom with government out of the decision.
His objection centers on bill language that limits the money to pre-approved education providers and vendors, with the Texas comptroller deciding who qualifies. West would rather let parents deduct what they spend on schooling from their property tax assessment. He reads the Republican Party of Texas platform plank calling for funding that follows the student with no strings attached.
On the Legislature, West says to follow the money and the lobby. He describes the Dallas County GOP’s censure of two House members under party rules, now before the State Republican Executive Committee, and wants county parties tracking votes and backing one challenger per race. Miller closes by arguing that Texans who want better government after independence have to start fixing Austin now.
