Professor Wall (Grant M. Dahl) and the Secession Minstrel welcome Madison and MayCee Holmes, the sisters who co-host the At Home With Holmes podcast, days before Albertans vote on whether to seek a binding vote on leaving Canada. The sisters say affordability tops the list for young Albertans: friends still living with their parents, couples who want children but cannot buy a house, and, in MayCee’s account, 40 to 50 percent of a paycheck “not actually going towards your own prosperity.” The second concern is cultural. University students tell them campus is too volatile to raise the subject.

Madison says most of their generation sees independence as nonpartisan “because it’s their future and their future is not political.” The sisters count self-described Marxists among the young supporters they know, and say they have dropped political labels altogether. Asked by the Minstrel about Washington’s interest in Alberta’s oil, MayCee argues Alberta is already dependent on the United States, and that independence would let it make more of its own decisions. Madison adds that an Alberta freed of production caps and tanker bans would have “more to give, period.” MayCee also turns the anti-American mood around. When people tell her Canada is united against Trump, she asks what it is united toward, “and most of the time they pause.”
