Governor Abbott released on social media today that he is invoking the invasion clauses of the US and Texas Constitutions to “fully authorize Texas to take unprecedented measures to defend our state against an invasion.”
Many Texans are cautiously optimistic today following an announcement by Governor Abbott that the border crisis meets the criteria for “invasion” according to the US and Texas Constitutions. By declaring an invasion, Abbott says that the state will use the National Guard to “repel and turn back” immigrants, and will use the Department of Public Safety to arrest and “return to the border” immigrants who crossed illegally. Also included are promises of border wall construction, gun boats on the river, and efforts to secure compacts with other states and nations to address the influx of migrants.

This story will no doubt develop over the next few days, weeks, and months. Will the Governor truly take care of business, as he’s authorized to do? Will Texas be successful in these efforts? Will the Biden administration obstruct, stand in the way, sue, or other tactics that will prolong the difficulty?
In an independent Texas, we’d have solved the issue a long time ago. Even so, today’s declaration of invasion seems to be a step in the right direction. Time will tell.
