Host Will Kacy opens This Month at the TNM with a recording of Executive Director Nate Smith’s roadmap to an independent Texas, delivered to the movement’s leadership. The center of it is the Texas Independence Referendum Act. A vote of the people is what makes independence real, Smith argues, and it has to run alongside election integrity so the result holds.
Smith works through the plan: pass the bill in the 2023 legislative session and put the referendum to Texans the November after, win by a margin wide enough to settle the question, recruit candidates at every level from the schoolhouse to the statehouse, and reach Texans across party lines rather than Republicans alone.
