History moves in roughly eighty-to-hundred-year cycles, they argue, four turnings like four seasons. It is not a crystal ball, Kacy says, but a lens. He walks the cycle from the postwar high through the awakening and the unraveling to the present crisis, and makes the case that these are exactly the conditions in which an old order gives way and something like Texas independence becomes possible.
