Daniel Miller flew solo this week and closed the show on the question several viewers had been asking: why should Texans care what happens in Scotland, Wales, Ireland, Alberta or Quebec? His answer is that every one of those movements is walking the same road. It is not TNM’s place to say any of them would be better off independent. It is TNM’s place to cheer on the exercise of self-determination itself, the way Texans celebrated that the UK got a vote on leaving the European Union and that Scotland got a vote in 2014, even though it failed. Miller said he has watched each of those moments move opinion here at home, and that movements from Catalonia to Nuevo Leon look to Texas for guidance and wonder why it is not independent already.
Earlier in the hour he returned to Trump’s proposed $5,000 checks. His position has not changed: taking from one person by force to give to another is theft, and the money would be added to a federal debt that is a deferred tax on everyone. If it is printed, prices rise and the check buys less. He tied it to the Can Texas Make It report, which uses Washington’s own figures to show a roughly 20-year clock on federal finances that promises like this keep compressing. He also previewed the USexit work, which applies the same methodology state by state. Four other states have been run so far, and he said almost none would have serious trouble standing on their own.
On the opposition, Miller argued most opponents simply do not understand how any of this works, a smaller group is malicious, and politicians with federal ambitions are against a vote because they know how it would go. His advice: do not spend your five minutes a day arguing with people who will never move. The facts are for reinforcing the convinced, because the network tipping point is 10 percent of people with unshakable belief, and building that capacity is what gets and wins the vote.
