Daniel Miller, President of the Texas Nationalist Movement and author of the book TEXIT: Why and How Texas Will Leave The Union, joins Chris Salcedo to discuss #TEXIT and #NationalDivorce.
Chris Salcedo opened the segment on a University of Virginia Center for Politics poll about red and blue states separating. Daniel Miller said pundits had treated the idea of splitting the United States like fantasy football, while groups like the TNM had been working the issue on the ground for years. He pointed to Brexit and the Scottish referendum as proof that people who want to govern themselves can do it.
Miller said the pressure comes from a federal government that ignores the sovereignty of the states that created it. Asked whether other states would follow, he said he had just been on a call with leaders of the movement for California to leave and with people in New Hampshire, where a withdrawal bill had been filed. On the far side of independence, he said, former states could form alliances for defense and trade.
He closed with the question the TNM has asked from the start. Knowing what they know about the federal government, would Texans vote to join the union today? If not, why vote to stay?
