What You Need To Know About The ONLINE TEXIT Petition Right Now

While it was previously believed that the TEXIT petition could only be signed in person, one phone call changed everything.

The TNM’s legal team conducted a thorough review of the relevant portions of the Texas Election Code and gave us the guidelines for making the petition conform to the statutes in the Election Code. We were able to pass it along to our tech team and get a form and process that meets all the legal requirements and obligations specified in the Texas Election Code.

Since we launched the online petition, there were some questions about the legally required wording of the petition. This video explains it in detail and tells you how to sign the petition. Daniel Miller appears partway through the walkthrough to read the statement Texas law requires before a voter signs the petition. The promo notes that in-person signing events had drawn a strong response but that some Texans couldn’t get to one.

A signer clicks Sign Now in the Sign the Petition section and watches Miller’s reading. After checking the required boxes and filling in the form, the signer certifies being a registered Texas voter. A mobile number is optional and brings updates on the petition’s progress.

The line that had caused the most confusion says signing makes a voter ineligible to vote in another party’s primary or take part in its convention. Because the petition asks to place the question on the Republican Party primary ballot, signers can’t vote or serve as a delegate in the Democrat primary, or in a third party’s, such as the Libertarian or Green Party. They can still vote in the Republican primary, and in the general election they can vote for anyone they want.
