Texas Nationalists Celebrate Texas Independence in Tyler

Members of the Texas Nationalist Movement marked Texas Independence Day with a gathering on the downtown square in Tyler. The group holds that Texas culture and heritage deserve to be celebrated, and members said they wanted to remind people that Texas once stood as an independent nation and that Texans shouldn’t forget their roots.
One man at the gathering said the independence Texans celebrate was hard won. Another reached for Steinbeck, who wrote that Texas is a whole other country. Texas is a state of mind, the speaker added, and that state of mind still exists today.
The report recalled the siege by Santa Anna and the war that ended at San Jacinto, the fight that secured the independence the group gathered to honor.
