The trailer for “Adventures of the Conch Republic” sets the story in Key West in 1982, when a roadblock on the road into the Florida Keys left residents unable to get out. As one line puts it, people could visit the Keys but couldn’t leave. Local leaders answered with a protest. They declared independence on the courthouse steps and announced that Washington “shall represent a foreign nation” to Key West.

The rest of the trailer draws on people who were there, many of them still amused by it. One says he’ll plead the Fifth, and the sixth and seventh, whatever he needs. Another describes the protest’s leaders as a dream team and names them as the mayor, the maverick, the mogul and the shark. The trailer notes that Key West still celebrates the anniversary every April, and it closes on the claim that the town has always gone its own way while the rest of the world goes another.
