Donnie Self runs the Republican Party in Chambers County. On June 16 he signed the Texas First Pledge, putting himself on the record for letting Texans vote on whether the state stays in the union.
The pledge commits a signer, where the office allows, to “vote for legislation and resolutions to call for a vote on Texas reasserting its status as an independent nation.” A county chairman casts no vote in the Legislature. What he runs is the machinery under it: the precincts, the county convention, the delegates who carry Chambers County’s priorities to the state party. Self has put his name to the case that independence belongs on that list.
He joins a roster that runs from local party officials to the party’s statewide leadership. The pledge is a commitment to a referendum, not an endorsement of anyone who signs it. Self made it.
