Daniel Miller told a border rally in Laredo that the ground under the crowd was still Texas, whatever the federal government or progressives had ceded to Mexico. He quoted Sam Houston’s line that Texas will again lift its head and stand among the nations, and said it applies to every piece of Texas.
Miller argued that Texans pay for federal failure at the border in money and in lives. He read from the Texas Bill of Rights, which declares Texas a free and independent state and holds that all political power is inherent in the people. Federal politicians who came to Laredo promising to fix the border, he said, have had every opportunity and failed.
He closed by asking the crowd to picture Texas already sovereign, running its own border and immigration policy with its own money and military, and then facing a vote on joining the union. Anyone who wouldn’t vote to join, he said, has no reason to vote to stay. Miller said the border will be secured only when Texas acts as a nation among nations.
