Texas Secessionist Warns US Over ‘Civil War’ Movie | Newsweek

A Texas secessionist warned the United States that Alex Garland’s Civil War was “pouring gasoline on the fire” of “Texit” arguments, as he renewed calls for a referendum on the Lone Star State’s split from the union.

Daniel Miller saw an early showing of Alex Garland’s film and spent the episode reconstructing the backstory the movie leaves out. The story opens near the end of a war, with Texas and California fighting together as the Western Alliance while other states have formed alliances of their own. Miller argues that breakdown is far more plausible than critics claim.

He games out one path to the film’s opening scene. It starts with Texas and California each voting to leave in a referendum. A president answers with military force, and Miller contends many troops would refuse what they see as an unconstitutional order. From there the two states, which agree on almost nothing, form a mutual defense pact. A military response, he argues, would drive other states out of the union and turn foreign allies against Washington.

Miller rejects Newsweek’s description of the Western Alliance as rebels, saying the rebels are the ones who ignore the Constitution. What TNM wants, he says, is a peaceful legislative process that ends in a referendum on Texas independence.
