Jack Miller traces the Cape’s grievance to the union the British Empire forced on it. His father belonged to the Committee for the Cape Republic as apartheid ended. He founded the Cape Independence Party after concluding the “rainbow nation” promised under the ANC was a lie.
He argues the biggest obstacle to a Cape vote isn’t the ANC but the Democratic Alliance, which governs the Western Cape. The provincial premier can call a referendum, he says. He wants the DA to begin with referendums on local control of policing, energy, education and housing, then one on independence if the central government won’t negotiate. Otherwise, he says, the movement will hold its own vote under self-determination guarantees in South African law and in international charters.
