Elections. Monday, October 5, is the last day to register to vote in the November 3 general election, according to the Texas Secretary of State. Early voting runs October 19 through October 30, and applications for a ballot by mail must be received by October 23. Travis County Tax Assessor-Collector Celia Israel told KUT that an application dropped in a mailbox near the deadline “might not get postmarked until a couple of days later.”
Gas tax. Attorney General Ken Paxton, the Republican nominee in the Texas Senate race, said Saturday that the federal gas tax should be ended permanently, hours after his opponent, state Rep. James Talarico, repeated his call at a Carrollton gas station to suspend the federal gas and diesel taxes, The Texas Tribune reported. The federal tax is 18.4 cents a gallon on gasoline and 24.4 cents on diesel. AAA puts the Texas average at $3.94 a gallon for regular and $5.90 for diesel, up 69 percent and 53 percent from a year ago.
Alberta. Immigration Minister Joseph Schow said the immigration questions on the October 19 referendum ballot do not target permanent residents or new Canadians, the Edmonton Journal reported. “The first step is to get a mandate, and that’s what the referendum is for,” Schow said. Four of the ten questions deal with immigration and eligibility for provincial programs, according to Elections Alberta. An Ipsos poll found more than 60 percent of Albertans plan to vote yes on the immigration questions, the Journal reported.
TNM calendar. Two Texas Nationalist Movement county teams have public events set for Friday and Saturday. In Llano, the county team sets up an information table on the Courthouse Square at 8 a.m. Saturday, October 3, the TNM calendar shows. A day earlier, on Friday, October 2, Caldwell County volunteers hold a clipboarding event at Lockhart City Hall during First Friday Lockhart, according to the calendar.
