Schools. The Texas Education Agency ended its two-year conservatorship of Socorro ISD in El Paso County on Wednesday, KVIA reported. Superintendent James Vasquez said a TEA deputy commissioner called him with the news that the district “had successfully met the requirements to end the conservatorship in Socorro ISD.”
Car sales. Lucid Group asked the full Fifth Circuit Court of Appeals on September 18 to rehear a September 4 panel ruling that upheld the Texas ban on manufacturers selling vehicles directly to consumers, the National Law Review reported. The Texas Occupations Code bars manufacturers and their affiliates from owning or operating a dealership for the vehicles they build, so only independent franchised dealers may sell new cars to Texas buyers, according to the panel’s opinion. Lucid owns a studio in Plano and a service center in Houston and has no franchised dealers in the state.
Federal spending. The White House budget office moved Friday to cancel nearly $1 billion in spending Congress had approved, using a maneuver known as a pocket rescission, PBS NewsHour reported. Federal law gives Congress 45 days to review proposed cuts, and the request arrived with five days left in the federal fiscal year. The Government Accountability Office, an arm of Congress, holds that pocket rescissions are illegal. The Supreme Court declined last year to block a $4.9 billion pocket rescission of foreign aid.
Alberta. Seventy-two percent of Albertans in a new Janet Brown Opinion Research survey said they would vote for Alberta to remain a province of Canada, 23 percent would vote to start the legal process toward a binding separation referendum, and 4 percent were unsure, CBC News reported. The firm surveyed 1,200 Albertans from September 8 to 21 using the wording that will appear on the October 19 ballot. Its April poll, which asked a different question, found 27 percent for separation.
Somaliland. President Abdirahman Mohamed Abdullahi Irro told the Council on Foreign Relations in New York on Friday that Turkey and Egypt are working to keep other governments from recognizing Somaliland, Dawan reported. Irro said Turkish officials had been visiting African countries and meeting their presidents. He did not name the African governments he said had been considering recognition.
The Alamo. The Alamo holds its free Tejanos at the Alamo program from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday, October 3, on Alamo Plaza in San Antonio, according to the Alamo. The Hispanic Heritage Month program brings descendants and local cultural groups to the plaza and covers Tejano figures from early San Antonio settlers and the 1836 defenders to Juan Seguin and Adina De Zavala.
