Alberta
Albertans voted by a wide margin on Monday to remain a province of Canada rather than have their government begin the legal process toward a binding referendum on separation. With 3,994 of 5,586 polls reporting early Tuesday, the unofficial count on the separation question stood at 1,301,420 votes for remaining and 414,837 for starting the process, about 76 percent to 24 percent, according to Elections Alberta. Premier Danielle Smith said “Albertans have voted for a stronger Alberta in a united Canada,” and Prime Minister Mark Carney called the outcome “a clear choice,” BBC News reported. The count continues on the Alberta live results page, and Elections Alberta is scheduled to announce official results October 29.
Alberta independence campaign
Jeffrey Rath, a Calgary lawyer and one of the leaders of the independence campaign, told the BBC World Service that the vote was a “first step” and that “our movement isn’t stopping and we’re continuing to move forward.” Asked whether the movement would keep seeking votes on independence, he answered “why not?” Independence leaders have indicated they plan to push Smith out as leader of the United Conservative Party, BBC News reported.
Texas
Texas Comptroller of Public Accounts Don Huffines on Monday launched a whistleblower portal for reports of fraud, corruption, tax evasion, waste and abuse involving state tax dollars, according to the comptroller’s office. Reports go directly to investigators in the office’s Law Enforcement Operations division, a statewide police organization reorganized when Huffines took office August 1, and tipsters may remain anonymous. “Texans see things we cannot. If you witness or suspect fraud, tax evasion, waste, or abuse, report it,” Huffines said.
Texas parks
Gov. Greg Abbott said Monday that a possible sale of Boca Chica State Park to SpaceX is not coming before the Texas Parks and Wildlife Commission soon. “What I know is that that’s not coming up for a vote anytime soon,” Abbott said at a news conference, The Texas Tribune reported. Texas Monthly had reported that the commission planned to discuss the sale of 1,300 acres of public land in Cameron County in a closed session of its November 5 meeting.
Texas detention
The 56-year-old man who died Saturday in federal immigration custody at the Rio Grande Processing Center in Laredo was a lawful permanent resident, U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) said Monday, The Texas Tribune reported. ICE said officers detained Emiliano Andrade-Covarrubias at a Laredo port of entry on June 26 because they believed he had obtained his legal status fraudulently by failing to disclose a 2004 theft arrest. The cause of death is unknown while the Webb County Medical Examiner completes the autopsy.
Western Sahara
The United Nations General Assembly’s Fourth Committee on Thursday adopted its annual resolution keeping Western Sahara on the UN list of Non-Self-Governing Territories, this time by a recorded vote of 152 in favor, 2 against and 7 abstentions, Capital FM reported. The United States and Israel voted against the text, according to the Kenyan broadcaster, which said the recorded vote broke with the committee’s longstanding practice of adopting the resolution without one.
