Texas. The Department of Homeland Security will send Texas $7.5 billion from the State Border Security Reinforcement Fund to reimburse Operation Lone Star, Gov. Greg Abbott announced on September 18. Texas had sought $11.1 billion, the Texas Tribune reported, and the award comes 14 months after Congress created the fund. “Texas held the line when Washington would not,” Abbott said.
Texas Legislature. The House Governmental Oversight Select Committee will meet September 30 to hear testimony on prosecutorial accountability and develop reforms, Speaker Dustin Burrows said in a joint statement with Gov. Abbott and Lt. Gov. Dan Patrick. The statement cites murder charges dismissed by the Travis County District Attorney’s office, and Burrows called the issue “a top priority for the Texas House next session.”
Galveston County. County commissioners voted 3 to 0 on September 18 to use the March primary precinct map in the November election, The Daily News reported, after the Texas Supreme Court ruled on September 11 that the county could not redraw lines between the primary and general election. “Nothing in the Election Code authorizes what occurred here,” the court wrote. The June 29 maps take effect January 8, 2027.
Galveston. Restoration of the Texas Heroes Monument at Broadway and 25th Street begins September 28 under a city contract of about $121,300 paid from hotel occupancy tax revenue, The Daily News reported. The city moved ahead although ownership of the monument remains unresolved. Henry Rosenberg commissioned the monument to the heroes of the Texas Revolution from sculptor Louis Amateis, and it was completed in 1900, according to the Handbook of Texas.
Greenland. The governments of Greenland, Denmark and the United States announced on September 18 that they expect to sign an Arctic and North Atlantic security agreement at the United Nations General Assembly next week. It enters into force only after the necessary parliamentary procedures. Danish Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen said the agreement recognizes “the sovereignty and territorial integrity of the Kingdom and the Greenlandic people’s right to self-determination.”
Alberta. The Alberta government has stopped giving political parties the names, addresses and phone numbers on the provincial voter list through December 31, Castanet reported, after a leaked copy exposed the data of nearly three million Albertans this spring. The opposition NDP said the change will make it harder to scrutinize the October 19 referendum, which includes a question on separation from Canada.
Somaliland. President Abdirahman Mohamed Abdullahi met Senator Ted Cruz of Texas on Capitol Hill to press Somaliland’s case for United States recognition, Horn Diplomat reported. Cruz urged the president in August 2025 to recognize Somaliland. “Somaliland is ready to build a lasting partnership with the United States,” Abdullahi said.
England. A second English village is weighing a referendum on leaving the United Kingdom. Barnham, in Suffolk, a village of about 600, faces government plans to house 1,250 asylum seekers at the nearby RAF Barnham site, and the parish council leader, John Bauer, said he is “certainly not ruling anything like that out,” the East Anglian Daily Times reported. The paper’s straw poll found 60 percent of villagers would vote to leave. Barnham would follow Piddington, which voted 285 to 26 for independence on September 15.
