Texas. Federal prosecutors in Fort Worth charged seven noncitizens with voting in federal elections or falsely claiming citizenship, most of the cases tied to the November 2024 election in Tarrant County. The same day, the Texas Secretary of State referred 117 more cases to the Attorney General and reported that 578 voters flagged by the federal SAVE database had shown they were citizens.
Alberta. One month before the October 19 vote on whether to begin the process toward a binding referendum on leaving Canada, Elections Alberta has received about 520,000 special ballot applications. The deadline to apply is September 25.
Scotland. On the 12th anniversary of the 2014 independence referendum, Deputy First Minister Jenny Gilruth said more than a million young Scots will have become eligible to vote by 2029. “The UK Government must now be true to the Prime Minister’s word and agree the route for Scotland to hold our referendum,” she said.
Quebec. A sovereignty referendum dominated the second televised leaders’ debate on September 16, ahead of Quebec’s October 5 election. Parti Québécois leader Paul St-Pierre Plamondon has pledged to hold one in his first term, after 2029. “Is it really the time to add uncertainty with the referendum of Paul St-Pierre Plamondon?” Coalition Avenir Québec leader Christine Fréchette asked.
Somaliland. President Abdirahman Mohamed Abdullahi spent the week in Washington meeting administration and congressional officials in his push for U.S. recognition, offering access to the port of Berbera and the territory’s minerals. “We are not giving anything for free. We have to offer something,” he told Semafor. Israel became the first United Nations member to recognize Somaliland in December 2025.
Hong Kong. The European Parliament voted 459 to 12, with 86 abstentions, on September 17 to urge sanctions on Hong Kong officials responsible for the crackdown on civil liberties. The resolution cites the 20-year sentence handed to 78-year-old Jimmy Lai and more than 400 arrests under the territory’s security laws since June.
