A Galveston County district judge on Thursday ordered Galveston ISD to display Ten Commandments posters in its classrooms within 10 days, granting a request from Attorney General Ken Paxton under Senate Bill 10, the 2025 state law that requires the displays, Texas Public Radio reported. The district’s board had delayed the displays while the law was challenged in court. In April the Fifth Circuit ruled that Texas can enforce the law.

The Supreme Court opens its term today with Suncor Energy v. Commissioners of Boulder County, in which the Colorado county seeks damages from oil companies under state law for the effects of climate change. The question presented is whether federal law precludes state-law claims over the effects of interstate and international greenhouse-gas emissions, and the Court also told the parties to argue whether it has jurisdiction to hear the case at all, according to the docket. Justice Samuel Alito withdrew from the case on September 28.

Voters in Quebec’s 127 ridings choose a new provincial government today, with polls closing at 8 p.m. Eastern time. The Parti Québécois led the final polls, and its leader, Paul St-Pierre Plamondon, has pledged to hold a referendum on sovereignty if his party forms a government, though not before 2029, BNN Bloomberg reported.

The presidents of Egypt, Somalia and Eritrea and Sudan’s military leader, Gen. Abdel Fattah al-Burhan, met Sunday in El Alamein, Egypt, and rejected any recognition of Somaliland, the northern region that declared independence from Somalia in 1991, Kaab TV reported. The leaders also backed Somalia’s territorial integrity and rejected unilateral measures affecting the Nile water rights of Egypt and Sudan.
