Camp Mystic. Kerr County District Attorney Lucy Wilke asked the court Friday to let her and her office recuse themselves from the Texas Rangers’ criminal investigation of Camp Mystic and to appoint an attorney pro tem, The Kerr County Lead reported. Wilke cited her ties to the Hunt area and an office down an assistant district attorney, and she asked that a special prosecutor from the Texas Attorney General’s Office be appointed. No criminal charges have been filed. Six members of the Eastland family, which runs the camp, have asked Judge Kirsten Cohoon to stop investigators from reviewing data seized under the Rangers’ 14 search warrants, arguing the warrants are overbroad and reach privileged communications with their lawyers, KSAT reported.
Utility bills. Net income at Oncor rose from $651 million in 2019 to $1.01 billion in 2025, and at CenterPoint Houston from $356 million to $578 million, over the same years the Public Utility Commission of Texas set their transmission and delivery rates, Texas Scorecard reported Friday. The commission has approved two 765-kilovolt lines in its Permian Basin transmission plan, a buildout the report put at $36 billion.
UNT recruiting. The University of North Texas agreed to pay the Edwise Foundation, a student placement agency, a flat $3,000 for each student living outside the United States who enrolled full time in a UNT degree program, paid in two $1,500 installments, under a 2021 agreement that replaced one signed in 2018. Texas Scorecard reported that the agency describes itself as based in Kathmandu, Nepal.
Flood alerts. The U.S. Senate passed the Mystic Alerts Act by unanimous consent on October 1, sending it to the President, Texas Scorecard reported. The bill lets satellite networks carry Wireless Emergency Alerts when cell networks fail, according to the office of Texas Rep. August Pfluger, who sponsored it in the House.
Scotland. UK Justice Secretary Alex Norris told Sky News that Prime Minister Andy Burnham’s openness to rejoining the European Union does not reopen the question of a second Scottish independence referendum. “I wouldn’t link the two things,” Norris said, the Scottish Daily Express reported. Former First Minister Nicola Sturgeon said parties backing independence and another referendum “keep winning elections in Scotland.”
Alberta. First Nations groups across Alberta are running voter registration drives and translating the referendum questions ahead of the October 19 vote, Global News reported. Albertans will answer 10 questions, nine on immigration and constitutional issues and the last on whether to remain in Canada or hold a binding vote on leaving. Organizer Tania Cameron of the First Nations Rock the Vote campaign said the campaign is “about relaying the message from the people that separation is off the table.”
