School takeovers. Two Houston lawmakers plan bills to limit the Texas Education Agency’s power to take over school districts, the Texas Tribune reported Thursday. State Sen. Molly Cook would raise the trigger from five straight failing ratings at a single campus to failing ratings at 10% of a district’s campuses, and state Rep. Nicole Collier proposes a “continuity board” to keep elected trustees involved during an intervention. The agency took over the Houston Independent School District more than three years ago, the largest takeover in state history, and the district’s failing campuses have fallen from 56 to five under state-appointed Superintendent Mike Miles.
Fort Hood. Nidal Malik Hasan, the Army psychiatrist who killed 13 people and wounded 32 at Fort Hood in 2009, is scheduled to be executed by firing squad at the post on December 3, the Pentagon announced, and Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth said the execution will be livestreamed. “We’ll make sure that people are able to watch it, that it’s public,” Hegseth said, according to the Texas Tribune. It would be the first military execution since 1961.
Washington. The federal government ran a $2.0 trillion deficit in fiscal 2026, $218 billion more than the year before, the Congressional Budget Office estimated Thursday, the Fiscal Times reported. Revenues rose $169 billion, or 3%, while outlays rose $386 billion, or 6%.
Federal Reserve. Most members of the Federal Reserve’s rate-setting committee judged at their September meeting that “another increase in the target range for the federal funds rate would likely be appropriate by year end,” according to the minutes released Wednesday. The committee voted 12-0 at that meeting to raise the range by a quarter point, to 3-3/4 to 4 percent.
Alberta. Advance voting in Alberta’s referendum runs Tuesday, October 13, through Saturday, October 17, from 9 a.m. to 8 p.m., ahead of Referendum Day on Monday, October 19, according to Elections Alberta. Vouching is no longer accepted as identification, and special ballots must be returned by mail.
