Alberta will hold a provincewide referendum on October 19 that asks voters whether the province should begin the legal process toward a binding vote on separating from Canada. It is one of ten questions on the ballot dealing with Alberta’s place in the Canadian federation.
The separation question does not ask Albertans to leave Canada directly. It asks whether the provincial government should “commence the legal process required under the Canadian Constitution to hold a binding provincial referendum” on whether Alberta should separate. A Yes vote would start that process. It would not, by itself, separate the province.
The measure reaches the ballot under Alberta’s Citizen Initiative Act, which lets residents force a referendum by petition. In 2025 the government lowered the signature threshold from 20 percent of the previous election’s turnout to 10 percent, making such votes easier to trigger. Premier Danielle Smith’s government placed the separation question on the ballot while appealing a court ruling that had halted a separate citizen petition.
Smith has declined to campaign for separation, pointing to concessions her government has recently won from Ottawa, including a proposed West Coast pipeline and a rollback of federal environmental rules. She has also refused calls to cancel or delay the vote, saying the question belongs to Albertans. Analysts widely expect the separation option to lose.
The other nine questions include proposals on provincial control over immigration, judicial appointments, opting out of federal programs, abolishing the Senate, and giving provincial law precedence over conflicting federal law. Support for Alberta separatism is concentrated among conservative voters and has risen since the 2025 federal election.
Elections Alberta has mounted the largest hiring drive in the province’s history to staff the vote. If the separation question passes, Alberta would begin the constitutional steps toward a future binding referendum.
