The premiers of Alberta and Saskatchewan rejected a call from Elon Musk for their provinces to leave Canada, less than two weeks before Albertans vote on whether to begin the process toward a binding referendum on separation.
Musk weighed in Wednesday on X after Quebec premier-designate Paul St-Pierre Plamondon said his dream of Quebec independence “will be realized one day,” the Canadian Press reported. “Good. Quebec should separate,” Musk wrote. “They would be better off. Alberta and Saskatchewan should separate too.”
Saskatchewan Premier Scott Moe answered the same afternoon by quoting Musk’s post with one word: “No.”
Moe has opposed separation for Saskatchewan, but he has defended Alberta’s right to put the question to voters. In May he said Saskatchewan has plebiscite and citizen-initiated referendum laws like Alberta’s. “If that was met in Saskatchewan, we’re a government that would follow the law in that space,” he told reporters.
Alberta Premier Danielle Smith also said she strongly disagrees with Musk, Global News reported. Smith has said she will vote to keep Alberta in Canada on October 19, even though her government put the question on the ballot.
On Question 10, Albertans will choose between remaining in Canada and having their government begin the legal process toward a binding referendum on separation, according to Elections Alberta. The result of that question is not binding.
In Quebec, the incoming Parti Québécois government has said it will consult Quebecers on independence in its first term, but not before January 20, 2029.
Whatever anyone posts from outside, on October 19 Albertans decide the next step for themselves.
