Daniel Miller broadcasts this Coffee Talk live from the Texas Nationalist Movement war room in Houston, in the thick of the Republican Party of Texas state convention. The exhibit hall had barely opened before the TNM booth was mobbed, and Miller’s read on the floor is blunt: no other issue in that building is generating the buzz that Texit is. But the night’s real story is the coordinated effort he says is being run against candidates who dared to sign the Texas First Pledge.

The pledge is narrow. It asks a candidate, if it is within the power of their office, to file or co-author legislation enabling a vote on Texas reasserting its status as an independent nation. It does not bind anyone to a specific bill. It is a litmus test on one question: will you uphold the right of the people of Texas, under Article 1, Section 2 of the Texas Constitution, to decide their own political future. More than 100 candidates signed it, from Greg Abbott’s primary challengers down to precinct chairs. Then Terry Leo Wilson, the candidate for House District 23, asked to be removed, and the emails and phone calls to TNM’s leadership escalated into something close to panic. Executive Director Nate Smith answered with patience, walking her through what the pledge actually says. The reason for the frenzy came out when her husband told Nate the truth: the threat was not physical. It was financial. A donor had threatened to pull roughly $600,000 from her campaign.

Miller does what the TNM does. He went to the Texas Ethics Commission filings and found a Texans for Lawsuit Reform PAC contribution total of $585,490, close enough to the figure to draw the line himself. He walks through TLR’s long record of propping up establishment Republicans, its proud endorsement of Lt. Gov. Dan Patrick, and a follow-on operation: a barely funded shell PAC calling itself the Coalition for Good Government, bankrolled in-kind by a consultant tied to Sen. Paul Bettencourt, Patrick’s chosen successor. Delegates got texts smearing the pledge. County chairs got calls pressuring vice-chair candidates Dr. Dana Myers and Alma Jackson to rescind. Both told them to go pound sand. Miller’s point is that exposing this is the mission, and that Texans deserve to know when Austin starts behaving like Washington.

Questions answered in this episode

  1. If Texit proceeds, what happens to currency in an independent Texas? (Miller points to his book and recent Coffee Talks where he has covered it in depth.)
  2. Are there any organizational meetings for TNM members at the state convention, and how do supporters connect on the ground?
  3. What time do delegates need to arrive at the convention in the morning? (Miller notes that is an RPT logistics question, not his to answer.)
  4. Is the new TNM Roku channel working, and what is coming to it? (A viewer confirms it is running well as more archive and live content rolls out.)
