Daniel Miller spent this week’s Late Night Coffee Talk wound up about two things, and he said so plainly. The first was a federal government doing exactly what the TNM has long warned it would do. Attorney General Merrick Garland had just directed the FBI to investigate parents who show up to school board meetings, recasting concerned mothers and fathers as domestic terrorists for daring to raise their voices over things like critical race theory in the classroom. The same day, it leaked that the FBI was serving Google with keyword warrants, demanding the identities of everyone who searched a given term rather than information about a named suspect. Add a Secretary of Education declaring that parents are not the primary stakeholders in their own children’s education, and Miller’s point landed hard. This is not a system that gets fixed from the inside.
The second thing was the weakness in Austin. Miller tore into Greg Abbott’s border press conference, whose entire framework, he said, amounts to asking the federal government to fix it, then asking again, then asking a third time. He hammered the lieutenant governor, whom he called silent Sam, for suddenly rediscovering property tax relief and offering crumbs from the master’s table instead of a real path to abolishing the property tax outright. The throughline was that the people who claim to run the most conservative session ever keep playing Texans for fools, while the genuine fix, giving the people of Texas a vote on independence, sits waiting.
That urgency drove the rest of the show. Miller pressed hard on the HB 1359 petition campaign, the 80,000 signatures it needs, and the volunteers who signed up in July and August and then vanished. He compared it to marching with Sam Houston and then refusing to fire a shot. Every signature, he argued, is one step closer to a free and self-governing Texas, and the clock is not on the movement’s side. He also teased a personal announcement, set for October 23 in the Conroe area, that he says will crack the foundations of the political establishment.
