Bless Your Heart, Steve Bannon: Daniel Miller on the CPAC Clash, the Mar-a-Lago Raid, and the One China Policy

This week handed Daniel Miller a fight he did not pick. At CPAC in Dallas, Real America’s Voice teed up his interview by rolling a Steve Bannon clip that branded TEXIT supporters a left-wing fever swamp dream and ended with a flat screw you to anyone who even raises secession. Miller’s answer was that Bannon is muddying the water between what America was founded to be and what the federal government in the Washington district of criminals has become. The real measure, he argued, is simple: if our states were already independent and were asked to join the union today, knowing everything we now know, would we vote yes? The answer has to be no.

Then he sharpened it. When opponents insist Texas cannot leave because the Civil War settled the question, they are echoing the Chinese Communist Party’s one China policy and its anti-secession laws, the same logic Beijing uses to club Taiwan and to wave the U.S. Pledge of Allegiance back in America’s face. Bannon walked into the production booth during the clip and afterward told Miller he was not one of those secession guys, are you. Miller said he is the secession guy, and offered a debate. He says the reaction from Bannon’s own supporters has been fury at being lumped in with leftists, and he is happy to hash it all out on one stage.

The Mar-a-Lago FBI raid hung over the whole night. Miller’s point was not partisan defense but a warning he has shouted from the mountaintops for years: the federal government will use the DOJ and the IRS as instruments of political change, and no election is going to fix a post-constitutional system. To the supporters growing restless and weary, his message had no sugarcoating. There is no shortcut, the work is the shortcut, and wanting the result without the effort makes you sound like a Bernie Sanders voter. The path to victory is the last mile of a marathon: stop trying to convince the unconvinced, find the already convinced, and get in the game.
