This week’s Late Night Coffee Talk opened with something Daniel Miller admitted he was still struggling to process. A coalition of conservative grassroots leaders across Texas, names like Andy Hopper, Tom Glass, Chris Brown, Jeff Sede, and Dr. Jack Reynolds, had pulled him onto a Zoom call to read him an open letter. Posted at standfortexas.com, the letter does not just ask. It lays out a case that Texas is on the verge of losing its sovereignty to Washington, that local self-government is critically impaired, and that the next term will bring all-out assaults on medical freedom, gun rights, private property, and religious liberty. Then it calls on Miller by name to oust Dan Patrick in the Republican primary for Lieutenant Governor.
Miller did not say yes and did not say no. He called it humbling, said he never expected to be contemplating a statewide office, and stressed that no decision has been made. What struck him most was the letter’s language about local self-government being impaired, the same trigger written into Article 1, Sections 1 and 2 of the Texas Constitution that the TNM has argued for years marks when the union is broken. To hear that argument coming back at him from a room full of grassroots leaders, he said, blew his mind.
From there he returned to the work in front of him. The petition campaign to put independence on the 2022 primary ballot is behind on certified circulators, with too many signed-up volunteers sitting on zero signatures while a few carry the load. He hammered the federal pattern too: Biden calling out Texas by name over the border, the abortion law, and school mask orders, plus a Green New Deal that targets the state’s energy and agriculture sectors and an ERCOT board stacked with non-Texans tied to the 2021 grid collapse.
