Daniel Miller used this week’s Late Night Coffee Talk to preview the biggest item on the TNM’s near-term calendar: a full 2026 rewrite of the movement’s 2015 “Can Texas Make It?” report. The original found Texas overpaying the federal government by somewhere between $103 billion and $160 billion a year. The new version was handed to skeptics to poke holes in, and now folds in federal debt, inflation, and regulatory accumulation that the first pass left out. Miller plans to walk through the top lines on next week’s show, July 30, ahead of the report’s public release on August 3.
On Greg Abbott’s newly sworn-in Secretary of State, Miller laid out the two tests he will judge the office by. The first is whether it folds to the Republican Party of Texas lawsuit to close the primaries, which he framed as a fight over separating political parties from the state’s election code. The second is whether it can finally clean up the voter-data mess that has left major vendors and candidates without accurate rolls from the primaries. He tied both back to election integrity, arguing a Texas independence referendum cannot rest on voting machines he does not trust.
Between questions, Miller announced the TNM’s first-ever founding sponsor, Universal Coin and Bullion, and asked viewers to pray for independence-referendum scholar Matt Qvortrup, who recently suffered a stroke. The night’s questions kept circling one theme: what independence actually asks of the people who want it. Whether the subject was replacing a sitting governor or forcing a special session on election integrity, his answer landed on personal responsibility over waiting for someone else to act. He closed on his running argument that Texas will be independent by design or by default, and that the coming report is meant to show the cost of staying tethered while the federal debt spiral runs.
