State Representative Travis Clardy went on a Facebook Live rant on Friday, equating TEXIT supporters with people who would have “gone over the wall at the Alamo.” The TNM’s Daniel Miller issued a challenge to find out who is the real coward.

Clardy’s remarks came during a Facebook Live in which he called himself a Texan first and an American second, yet called the talk of leaving the union unhealthy and unproductive. He argued the Texas effort isn’t equivalent to Brexit because the European Union gives its members a way out and the U.S. Constitution doesn’t. He pointed to his oath to support both constitutions and said that if the United States ever collapsed the way the Soviet Union did, Texas might have to make other decisions. Until then, he said, it stays in the union.
Miller answered by offering to drive to Nacogdoches and debate Clardy face to face in his own district. He asked Clardy to call the TNM office to accept, and said he expected calls from Texans to Clardy’s office to echo the challenge. Even a lawmaker who opposes TEXIT, Miller said, shouldn’t oppose letting the people of Texas vote on it.
