In this September 2025 edition of This Month @ The TNM, host Will Kacy explores a fascinating parallel to the Texas independence movement that’s unfolding right now in our northern neighbor’s backyard. While mainstream media ignores it, two Canadian provinces are making serious moves toward independence—and their strategies offer crucial insights for Texas nationalists.
Alberta, often called the “Texas of Canada,” is leading the charge. This oil and gas powerhouse sends 20-30 billion dollars annually to Ottawa while getting shortchanged on federal spending—sound familiar? After Prime Minister Mark Carney’s Liberals won in April 2025, Alberta’s legislature made it easier to organize independence referendums, requiring just 177,000 signatures (3.5% of the population). Premier Danielle Smith’s Alberta Sovereignty Act now allows the province to ignore harmful federal laws.
But here’s what the establishment doesn’t want you to know: these aren’t fringe movements anymore. The Alberta Republicans are organizing binding independence referendums with real political momentum. Meanwhile, British Columbia is pursuing independence from a different angle—cultural alignment with the Pacific Northwest and frustration with Ottawa’s hammer on their resource industries.
Why should Texas nationalists care? Because the same forces driving Western Canadian independence are at work right here: economic exploitation, regulatory overreach, cultural differences, and political powerlessness. When multiple regions in stable, democratic countries are all moving toward self-determination, it’s time to pay attention. We are not alone.
