The following is an official statement from Daniel Miller, President of the Texas Nationalist Movement, on the potential for an independence referendum in Alberta, Canada.
The Texas Nationalist Movement stands firmly with the people of Alberta in their quest for an independence referendum and their fundamental battle for the most basic right of any people: self-government.
For too long, Alberta has been held hostage in a relationship that can only be described as unbalanced. Ottawa extracts billions in wealth from Alberta’s resources while simultaneously working to undermine the very industries that generate that wealth. The Federal Government has been wildly inconsistent with its policies toward Alberta, extracting maximum benefit while returning minimum respect.
To put this all in perspective, it’s worth looking at the problem from an old set of eyes. Throughout history, when a people find their values dismissed, their resources exploited, and their political voice diluted, self-determination becomes not just an option but a necessity.
The numbers speak for themselves. Alberta consistently contributes more to the Canadian confederation than it receives in return. The province is treated as an economic engine when convenient but denied meaningful political power at the federal level. Power, once consolidated, is reluctant to surrender itself. Ottawa has demonstrated little interest in meaningful reform that would address Alberta’s legitimate grievances.
Some will claim that Alberta can’t survive on its own – that it needs Ottawa’s supervision to function. These arguments ring hollow when you look at the facts. Alberta would rank among the world’s most prosperous nations with a robust economy, abundant natural resources, and a skilled, educated population. The world is filled with successful independent nations with far fewer advantages than Alberta possesses.
The power to decide Alberta’s future belongs to Albertans alone. Not to Ottawa, not to political elites, and certainly not to those who fear what true self-government might bring. No province should be held captive in a political union that no longer serves its interests or respects its values.
Albertans shouldn’t fall victim to Project Fear – the coordinated campaign of intimidation and misinformation that always emerges when people dare to question the status quo. We’ve seen it in Texas, Scotland, Britain, and Catalonia. The playbook is always the same: “You can’t do that. They won’t let you. It’s too hard.” These are the words of those who profit from your submission.
The Texas Nationalist Movement and the people of Texas support Albertans’ right to vote on their own future. We’ve been walking this road for decades, and we recognize fellow travelers when we see them. This movement isn’t simply politics – it’s about the basic human desire to chart your own course and control your own destiny.
The day is coming when Alberta will need to make a clear decision about its place in Canada. The Texas Nationalist Movement is proud to stand with Albertans as they demand the right to determine their own political future through a free and fair referendum. Self-determination is not a privilege granted by governments – it is an inherent right of every people.
